Investigations were carried out during 2010 to standardize growing substrates and NPK doses for growth and flowering of alstroemeria. In this experiment different growing substrates and NPK doses combinations were tested. A field experiment was laid under poly house conditions in split plot design, consisted of four growing substrates viz., sand: soil: FYM (1:1:1, v/v), rhododendron forest soil (Rhododendron arboreum L.), rai forest soil (Picea smithiana L.) and five NPK doses viz., basal dose of 30: 15: 30 g/m2, once a week fertigation with 100: 50: 100 ppm, twice a week fertigation with 100: 50: 100ppm, once a week fertigation with 150: 100: 150 ppm, twice a week fertigation with 150: 100: 150 ppm. Growing substrate consisting of rhododendron forest soil was found to be best growing substrate for vegetative and flowering parameters like stem length, stem thickness, early flowering, number of flowers per cyme, vase life and cut stems per plant. Whereas twice a week fertigation with 150: 100: 150 ppm NPK found best dose for stem length, stem thickness, early flowering, number of flowers per stem, vase life and cut stems per plant. Keywords

Background/Objectives: French marigold (T. patula) hardy annual, about 30 cm tall, forming a bushy plants are grown as a loose flower and a garden flower. Four male sterile lines and 18 diverse pollinators as tester were used to produce 72 F1’s. These crosses and parents were evaluated for different ornamental characteristics. Methods/Statistical Analysis: These F1 hybrids along with 22 parental lines were evaluated during the summer (2009) and rainy season (2009) in Randomized Block Design. Highly significant variances for all the traits indicated the sufficient variability was observed in the parental material for all the characters under study. Findings: Among male sterile lines, ms8 (summer season) and ms9 (rainy season) proved good general combiners, while testers Spray Mix -1, Bonita Bolero and Safari Queen were the best general combiners for both the seasons. However, cross combinations viz. ms8 x Hero, ms10 x Hero, ms10 x Cupidon Yellow, ms8 x Double Dwarf Lemon was the best in terms of specific combining ability during the summer. Whereas, during winter the combinations viz. ms9 x French Bonita-3, ms10 x French Bonita-3, ms9 x Bonita Bolero, ms8 x Sunkist and ms9 x French Bonita-2 were best specific combiners. In both the seasons, the ration of σ2 GCA/σ2 SCA was less than unity for all the characters showing the preponderance of dominance variance. Applications: Marigold is especially used for festive occasions, marriages, religious ceremonies, social function and in landscape plans because its having a wide range of attractive colours, shape and size having good keeping quality. Now a days, marigold is used as a source of pigment for poultry feed. Caretonoids is used as poultry feed mix and food colourant. Lutin, is major component of Caretonoid is having therapeutic values. Marigold cultivation controls the nematode population in as well as mosquito repellant products are also being used. The mean sum of square for parentsvs crosses in this study for all the traits during summer and rainy season indicated the presence of heterosis. Thus it is obvious that heterotic effects represent an important resource in hybrid breeding of French marigold. Keywords

Studies on the effect of growth regulators viz., Paclobutrazol and Benzyl Adenine (PBZ and BA, respectively) on Oriental Lily Hybrids, 'Star Gazer Pink' and 'Star Gazer White' in the second year were carried out at Department of Floriculture and Landscaping, Dr. Y.S. Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan (H.P). The effect of growth regulators applied in the first year, was studied on growth and flowering of Oriental lily hybrids in the second year. Plant height and number of leaves plant-1 were recorded maximum when PBZ 25 ppm was applied in the first year. Maximum plant height and number of leaves plant-1 were found in 'Star Gazer White' (84.46 cm; 35.04 cm). Bulbs of 'Star Gazer White' when dipped in PBZ 25 ppm for 12 h in the first year resulted in maximum plant height (102.50 cm) in the second year. Leaf area in the second year was recorded maximum in 'Star Gazer White' (34.40 cm2) when PBZ 50 ppm was applied as bulb dip in the first year. Flower buds were initiated earlier in 'Star Gazer White' (84.48 days) as compared to 'Star Gazer Pink' (85.90 days). Days to bud initiation were also recorded minimum (75.81 days) when PBZ 25 ppm was applied as pre-plant bulb dip. More number of flowers plant-1 was recorded in 'Star Gazer White' (5.42) which lasted longer on stems (16.77 days). Bulbs dipped in growth regulators in the first season produced maximum number of flowers plant-1 (5.72) and duration of flowering was also maximum (18.28 days). Keywords
